Every country is like a particular type of person. America is like a belligerent, adolescent boy; Canada is like an intelligent, 35-year-old woman. Australia is like Jack Nicholson. We owe the Aboriginal peoples a debt that is four centuries old. It is their turn to become full partners in developing an even greater Canada. And the reconciliation required may be less a matter of legal texts than of attitudes of the heart. Romeo LeBlanc

I've been a very lucky guy. I played on championship teams. I played for Canada. I've won some awards and I'm very proud of those accomplishments. But I don't think there's anything greater than to come home and to be recognized at home. This is the pinnacle. Bobby Orr

Poems For Canada day 2017

It was formerly believed, on a sea-battered shore
though the storm at home blasted,
that in the distant west there still lay lands,
where calm and sun never ended,

for there the good season had found its retreat
and freedom and compassion - all that is best.

They set no sail, but thought high,
by the ocean they dreaming stood,
as the sun slid into the lowest west
in the evening's blue-misted spring dusk,
then hope and desire glide out with the breeze
on the still-blank, sun gilt, wide armed sea.

Though oceans still flood, that separate lands,
the passage across is effortless.
And our Markland, Canada, its genius and care
the world held out to you over the sea.
To the Greeks you could only appear in a poem -
but to Icelandic sea kings you gave yourself first.

Still human hope turns its tired eyes
from the east, to dream about you -
you proved good to all, who loved you fervently,
who possess here rapture and home.
And all with you is fulfilled and able to root
which the unquiet spirit has dreamed best.

Honoured guests, dear friends, ladies and gentlemen — fellow Canadians and Friends of Canada:
Thank you for joining us to celebrate our national day.
I am always asked exactly what it is that we celebrate on Canada Day.
Allow me to explain:  146 years ago, on July 1, 1867, the Confederation of four Canadian provinces created our country.
The inclusion of Lower Canada – now Quebec – ensured from the outset that Canada would be a blend of two nations, two cultures and two languages.  The acceptance of both civil and common law systems is a factor that still makes us a helpful player in the courts and tribunals of The Hague.  And from the outset, religious tolerance was our only option.
Canada emerged from a lengthy process of brainstorming about practical matters, of negotiations, proposals, and legislative ratifications.  We were not born of bloody conflict. Some may see this as prosaic.  But to the more than 300,000 immigrants who join us each year, accommodation, tolerance and diversity still make Canada a welcoming home for all.
(I must also say though that Canadians take great pride in our history of military valour, which predates our Confederation.  This history has an important Dutch reflection, since Canadian troops played a central role in the World War 2 Liberation.)
In the years since Confederation, Canada has grown from sea to sea to sea – from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic.  We now include 10 provinces and three territories, including the largely Inuit territory of Nunavut, a land mass almost the size of Western Europe.  This year the people of Nunavut mark their 14th year of self-government. This year, too, we pay particular attention to our relationship with the North, as Canada takes on the Chair of the Arctic Council.
We recognize the culture and aspirations of our northern peoples.  In fact, you probably noticed as you came into the residence today that we are showing slides of the Arctic art that is displayed throughout this residence and our chancery.  I would invite you to visit our Embassy website to see the full virtual gallery of these celebrated artistic achievements.
Finally, as we mark important achievements and milestones today, I think it is worth mentioning that Canada first established diplomatic relations with the Netherlands in 1939.  So over the next year, we will mark the 75th anniversary of this very warm, special, and dynamic friendship.
I am proud to be part of this tradition, as we move to a new generation of leadership under King Willem-Alexander.  What a dazzling highlight that transition was, just weeks ago!  Canada was particularly honoured that our Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon were invited, and able to represent us at that special event.
We look forward to continuing our thriving Dutch-Canadian partnerships in innovation, investment and trade, foreign affairs, and people-to-people links in the years to come.
One thing that never changes from year to year is the tremendous support of the Canadian business community for this Canada Day reception.
You will have seen our partner companies mentioned in the invitation:  Air Canada, CAE, OpenText, Shell, Vermilion Energy, Bombardier, Netherlands-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and TD Bank.  I would like to highlight their contributions here at the reception, and thank them for their generous partnership to make this event possible.
I would also like to thank the BuZa Band, as well as Klarijn Verkaart who will sing O Canada for us.
Last but never least, I would like to thank all of you for your presence here today, and for your friendship with Canada.
In welcoming you back to this historic and special residence, we are proud to celebrate our country’s many achievements, past and present, at home and abroad.
Happy Canada Day!

Canada is an amazing country and it would be not fair to talk only about such ordinary and boring aspects like economic development, mining industry or political system – the things which would never attract neither you, nor any other curious person. It will be much better to dedicate this essay to the “Do you know…?” facts about Canada.
So, do you know that people who have two mother tongues (i.e. bilinguals) get older more slowly, than the ones who have only one language? In Canada people speak both French and English.
Do you know that near the beautiful Kingston city a famous Irish festival takes place?
Do you know that Canada is famous for its Spotted Lake? The waters of this lake have high concentration of different minerals (magnesium sulfate, sodium & calcium soleplates). What makes this lake so special is the fact that in summer almost all the water evaporates and the minerals are left there. As a result, on the place, where the water used to be, huge spots appear. The color of every spot depends on the composition of the mineral. The panorama is making you admire the picturesque place with bated breath!
Well, of course you know that Canada is internationally famous for the Niagara Falls! It is interesting to know that the Niagara Falls combines three other falls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Vail Falls! It is well-known that Niagara Falls is the most voluminous waterfalls on the Niagara River.
One can endlessly enumerate the…
