According to Yom Kippur tradition, the first of all Yom Kippur took place after the Israelites’ were  exodus from Egypt and they arrived at Mount Sinai, where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. while Descending from the mountain, Moses saw his people worshipping a golden calf and shattered all the sacred tablets in anger. But the Israelites atoned for their idolatry So God forgave all their sins and offered Moses a second set of tablets.So Since then it is cebrated as the day for asking forgiveness.
