Yom Kippur is a holy day which is observed on the tenth day of Tishri of the Jewish calender and marked by fasting and prayer for the atonement of sins by people to the god so it is also called Day of Atonement.

According to Yom Kippur tradition, the first Yom Kippur or Atonement took place when  the Israelites were exodus from Egypt and they  arrived at Mount Sinai, where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments.When Moses was descending from the mountain, he caught his people worshipping a golden calf so he shattered the sacred tablets in anger. Because the Israelites atoned for their sins and asked for forgiveness, God forgave their sins and offered Moses a second set of tablets.From that day Yom Kippur is Celebrated.
